First alarm assignment was sent on the report of a building fire. Engine 8 reported a two-story building with nothing showing. Battalion 2 arrived behind Engine 8 and reported smoke showing from the second floor. Building housed residential over commercial. Engine 8 went to the second floor with Ladder 5-A. Ladder 5-A brought a pump can and was hitting the fire with that. Engine 8 laid a tank line. Engine 17 laid a supply line and a backup line. Ladders 5-6 raised the aerial to the roof and placed ground ladders on sides A and B to the second floor. Rescue 1-A and Engines 1-6 assisted Ladder 5 with the primary search on the second floor. Rescue 1-C conducted a primary search of the basement and first floor and shut off utilities. A second alarm was called. Engine 22 assumed RIT and then relieved on a line on the second floor. Engine 6 assumed RIT on arrival. Ladder 11 assisted with overhaul and extinguishments on the second floor. Engine 7 relieved crews on the second floor. Extensive overhaul was required due to extension of fire into the cockloft. There were a number of bicycles on the second floor that hampered efforts to find and extinguish the fire. Drugs were discovered including marijuana plants and police were notified. The tenants were unable to be located after operations were started. Board up was requested for two exterior doors on the first floor. Last company left the fire ground at 0256.

An Initial Assignment was sent to investigate a building fire reported by a passing motorist. Engine 14 and Ladder 10 arrived reporting nothing showing. Engine 2 arrived and reported smoke from the eaves and from the second floor. Ladder 10 upgraded the response to a full first-alarm. Engine 14 laid a tank line through the front door for an interior attack. Ladder 10-A assisted in gaining entry. Ladder 10-B put the aerial to the roof. Engine 2 laid a supply line to Engine 14 and laid a working line off Engine 14 as a backup line. Ladder 10-A conducted the primary search on the second floor. Ladder 10 reported Engine 14 was hitting the fire. Engine 4 arrived and assumed RIT. Engine 4 laddered the building on the D side with a ground ladder. Ladder 10-B was on the roof, knocked off two large roof vents, and chopped two holes in the roof for ventilation. Ladder 10-B also reported the roof was firm and secure. Rescue 9 arrived and assisted in primary search of the building. Building was vacant and undergoing a major remodeling. Rescue 9-A reported fire on the first floor in the back of the building. Engine 2 took the backup line to the first floor. Second alarm was called when fire was discovered in the basement. Fire was knocked down on the second floor and crews were searching for fire extension. Engine 4 was ordered into the building and Engine 2 assumed RIT. When second alarm companies arrived Engine 15 assumed RIT and Engine 20 and Ladder 4 remained in staging. The fire, located in the rear of the building, was reported knocked down on all floors and declared under control. Last company left the fire ground at 0248.

Engine 14 arrived and reported heavy fire venting from the first and second floors of a two-story residential building. Engine 14 laid a tank line in an offensive attack. Ladder 10-A was conducting a primary search on the first floor; Ladder 10-B raised the aerial to the roof. Engine 20 laid their tank line and was hitting the fire on the first floor from the exterior but was ordered to shut down, as there were firefighters inside the structure. Engine 4 arrived, assumed RIT, and also laid a supply line to Engine 14. Rescue 9 arrived and was assigned to assist Ladder 10 with a primary search; the building was found to be vacant. Crews were then pulled from the building and assumed defensive attack. Ladder 10 was ordered to set up a water tower. Engine 20 laid their own supply line and also put up their water tower. Blitz nozzles were put in action on the corners of the building. Hand lines were also in action hitting the fire on the first floor from the exterior. A second alarm was called. Ladder 10 reported their ladder was frozen and was moved off the fire block. Ladder 4 arrived and their water tower was deployed to the corner of sector B & C. Water supply was a problem due to three Blitz nozzles and two water towers all drawing off the same water supply. Engines 15 and 2 were required to lay lines a couple of blocks away attached to a different hydrant loop. The structure soon collapsed in on itself. Hand lines and Blitz nozzles were shut down as Ladder 4 and Engine 15 were hitting the fire better. Extreme cold temperatures.

First alarm assignment dispatched to report of a fire in a boarded up and vacant duplex. Engine 14 arrived and reported fire showing in the second floor from front to back to a two-story vacant duplex. Engine 14 checked for entrance into the building and laid a tank line for rapid offensive interior attack through the front door to the second floor. Engine 16 arrived and laid a supply line and a backup line. Ladder 10 provided entry and started searches of the second floor. Ladder 4 arrived and assisted Ladder 10 with searches. Engine 20 arrived and assumed RIT. Engine 16 reported it appeared from the exterior that Engine 14 had knocked down the fire. Rescue 1 arrived and was assigned to search detail. Ground ladders were placed on sides B and D for egress from the second floor. Engine 14 reported that the house was filled with excess debris. Fire was found on the first floor rear and Engine 16 was deployed to extinguish fire on the first floor. Ladder 4 hooked second line off the wye to go to what at first was thought to be the cockloft but was actually remodeled third floor living area. Crews continued to search for hot spots and to open walls and ceilings. Primary searches declared the building clear. Crews had to remove debris from the building to gain access to walls and floors. Rescue 1 and Ladder 4 opened a hole in the front portion of the roof. Second alarm was called for relief companies. Fire was placed under control and crews continued to overhaul. Exposure on side D suffered some water damage and broken glass due to hose lines used to vent the second floor. Fire had spread from the second floor to the remodeled cockloft, roof, and the first floor. Cause of the fire is arson. Last company left the fire ground at 1537.

First alarm assignment dispatched to a reported building fire. Engine 14 arrived and reported heavy fire venting from the second and third floors on sides A, B, and C, of a large two and one-half story occupied duplex. All residents were reported to be out of the house. Engine 14 laid a tank line in front to the second floor, Ladder 10 conducted primary search on the first and second floor and found the building to be clear. Engine 4 laid a supply and backup line and Engine 2 assumed RIT and threw egress ladders. Rescue 9 secured utilities and conducted a primary search of the basement. A second alarm was struck and an MTC bus was ordered due to extreme cold and volume of fire. Heavy fire found in third floor and attic as well as knee walls, void spaces, and walls. Engine 16, Ladder 4, and Engine 20, arrived on the second alarm. A third line was laid on side C to knock down exterior fire from soffits and roofline. Line was then moved inside to the third floor. Extensive overhauling and opening up of void spaces was required to get at fire. Three additional relief companies were ordered to replace first alarm companies. Engines 17 and 7, and Ladder 2 did final wash down and overhaul. Residents were assisted with collecting belongings before board up. Cause of the fire is undetermined. Last company left the-fire ground at 2131.

Engines 4, 19, Battalion 3, and the Deputy arrived and had fire showing through the roof of a 3-story mixed-use occupancy. The Deputy assumed command. Engine 4 had difficulty finding access to the upper floors and forced a front door on the A side of the building and advanced a tank line for an interior attack. Engine 4 secured their own water supply and Engine 1 laid a back up line while Engine 19 assumed RIT. Crews made substantial progress with initial attack. Ladder 2A conducted a primary search of the third floor. Ladder 2B went to the roof for ventilation. Ladder 10 conducted a primary search of the second floor. Shortly after crews were given assignments, There was a report of a partial roof collapse in the rear of the building and Ladder 2B reported a large air-conditioning unit on the roof that appeared to be collapsing as well. Evacuation of the structure was ordered and crews maintained defensive operations for the remainder of the event. Rescue 9A and Rescue 9B searched adjacent structures and confirmed there was no extension and the occupancies were clear. A second alarm was struck and master stream applications covered the A, C, D, and roof sides of the structure. A large billboard was constructed on the roof of the fire building, there was a primary concern of collapse of the billboard, and all crews were ordered to maintain a collapse perimeter. Ladder 4 was special called for use of the aerial platform for direct fire attack and recon of the status of the billboard. Engine 7 supplied Ladder 4 for a master stream. Engine 20 was dispatched for additional support. One firefighter injury was reported with no lost time. Cause of the fire is undetermined. Last company left the fire ground on February 21, at 0015. Publisher's note: Minneapolis had a simultaneous working fire at 3445 Nicollet Avenue that also could have been a two-alarm fire, but due to a shortage of companies was held at the first alarm level. A call back was initiated for off-duty MFD firefighters to man spare apparatus and the St. Paul ED. sent two companies to help cover vacated Minneapolis stations.

First alarm assignment responded to 2615 Dupont Avenue North on a report from a neighbor that smoke and flames were coming from the building. Ladder 10 arrived and reported a large three-story house fully involved with exposures on sides B and D beginning to burn. An exterior attack was initiated on 2615 Dupont with Ladders 10 and 4 conducting primary searches on exposures at 2611 and 2617-19 Dupont. A second alarm was struck for additional companies. Engine 2 laid a supply line to Ladder 4 but had tied into a frozen hydrant and had to move to the next hydrant to get water. Ladder 4 put aerial master stream onto 2615 Dupont. Engine 20 laid its own supply line and set up Blitzfire on exposures B and D in the rear. Engine 16 tied into a hydrant, laid a line in from the north, and set up Blitzfire attack in front on exposure D. Engine 4, Ladder 4, Rescue 1, and Rescue 9 laid lines to the interior of exposure B and extinguished fire that had extended into the interior of that house on all floors, did extensive overhaul, and secured utilities. Engine 11, Engine 2, and Engine 16 laid lines to the interior of exposure D and extinguished fire on all floors, did extensive overhaul, and secured utilities. Xcel Energy was ordered to cut electrical service to all three buildings. Red Cross was ordered to assist 12 adults and 10 children. Building at 2615 Dupont was ordered razed by city inspector and the gas company was notified to shut off gas service. Crews assisted displaced occupants in gathering belongings and board-up was ordered for 2611 and 2617-19 Dupont. Companies stood by extinguishing hot spots as demolition company tore down the 261 5 building. Minneapolis Police ordered to stand by during board-up due to people attempting to enter the unsecured buildings and steal displaced persons belongings. Last company left the fire ground at 2318.

Full assignment sent to reported fire in a bed on the 3rd floor of a medical building. Security had silenced the alarm on arrival thinking it was a false alarm. Engine 1 found a fire being contained by a sprinkler head in a room on the 3rd floor. A second alarm was struck given the occupancy of the building. Engine 7 laid backup bundles and Engine 6 assumed RIT. A connection was made to the standpipes in the north stairwell with an attack line but the standpipe was dry. The fire was eventually controlled by the sprinkler system. Ladder 11 and Ladder 3 conducted primary searches of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors. Rescue 1 B secured the elevators. Engine 5 shut off the sprinklers. Ladder 11 and Rescue 1 used the stairwell to ventilate. All occupants had self evacuated or had been assisted by medical personnel. Cause of the fire was a halogen light too close to bedding. Last company left the fire ground at 0759.

Fire in an attached garage spread to the second floor rear bedroom and into the attic of a two and one-half story home. The fire totally consumed the two-car garage and a 1990 Jaguar inside. Of two vehicles that were parked in the driveway, one was totally consumed by the fire and the other suffered front-end fire damage. Crews reported the garage door was closed and the deadbolt on the north side service door was in the locked position. The garage roof collapsed as well as part of the structural walls. The fire extended into the two second floor bedrooms next to the garage and their ceilings had completely burned through to the attic. Five adults and three children were out of the house on arrival. Because of the heavy fire in the attic area crews were pulled out of the building, a defensive attack was initiated, and a second alarm requested. After knockdown from the exterior, crews went back inside to overhaul. Ambulance personnel treated three firefighters on scene - one for smoke inhalation, one for burns, and one for debris in the eye. Last company left the fire ground at 0635.

An initial assignment responded to report of smoke in a building at 2322 Elliot Avenue South. On arrival Engine 5 upgraded to a first alarm response for a possible basement fire after finding heavy smoke showing from 1st, 2nd and floor and chimney of a large three story occupied four-plex rooming house. Occupants reported three persons still inside and unable to escape. Engine 5 laid a tank line through a side door into the basement. Ladder 11 began primary search of the 2nd floor where they found and rescued one unconscious male victim and heard another victim calling for help. Ladder 3 located and rescued the second male victim who was conscious and talking. Both victims were transported to hospital by ambulance. A second alarm was struck. Engine 8 laid a supply line and a back up line. Engine 6 assumed RIT and threw egress ladders. Bulk of the fire in the basement was quickly knocked down with minor vertical interior extension. Rescue 1, Ladder 11, and Ladder 3 completed primary searches, vented, and checked for extension. Engine 1 and Engine 7 acted as relief companies. Fire was placed under control at 2116 hours. Red Cross was ordered for eight adult displaced occupants and Ladder 11 assisted in retrieving belongings. Last company left the fire ground at 2340.

A first alarm assignment was sent to a reported structure fire at 2543 Marshall Street Northeast. The Deputy was the first arriving unit and reported a large one-story commercial building with smoke showing. The calling party who lived in the front of the structure stated that the building housed a business that conducted painting and lacquer finishing of products. He said he had smelled smoke and found a large amount of smoke coming from the business. The Deputy called for a second alarm and assigned tasks to the arriving companies. Engine 2 and Engine 4 were to establish a water supply from a hydrant in front of and across the street from the structure and lay 2-1/2" hand lines into the D side of the building. Ladder 4 and Ladder 10 were assigned to conduct ventilation of overhead doors and windows along the D side of the building. Rescue 1 was to complete a primary search of the residential and office space on the A side. Engine 15 was assigned RIT. Staging for send alarm companies was set at 24th and Marshall Street. Engine 2 reported fire in the center of the structure extending to the ceiling and had darkened it down. Engine 4 assisted with back up lines. Second alarm companies were used to assist in operations. Last company left the fire ground at 2200.

An initial assignment was dispatched to a report of smoke coming from a vacant, boarded, building at 905 18-1/2 Avenue Northeast. While enroute, a police officer reported fire showing from two vacant, boarded, houses and the assignment was upgraded to a first alarm. Engine 11 arrived, reported two structures with smoke and fire visible on the first floor, laid a tank line between the structures for a defensive attack, and secured their own water source. Rescue 9A forced entry into the 905 building. Rescue 9B and C used saws to ventilate the first floor windows in both buildings. After knocking down fire on the first floors of both buildings, Engine 11 repositioned their tank line through the front door of the 905 building for an interior attack. Rescue 9A did a primary search of the 905 building. Engine 15 laid a backup line to the second floor of 905. Engine 2 assumed RIT. Ladder 4B secured their own supply line while Ladder 4A started to conduct a primary search of the 901 building. Rescue 9C laid a line through the front door of the 901 building for an interior attack. Ladder 11 assisted with primary search and overhaul in the 905 building. Crews had a hard time finding access to the second floor in the 901 building and were withdrawn in favor of a defensive attack and a second alarm was requested. Ladder 4 set up their aerial platform and attacked the fire on the second floor and cockloft. Engine 2 secured their own supply line and then laid a tank line to the rear of the 901 building. Ladder 4A laid a truck bundle off Engine 2. The bulk of the fire was knocked down in the 905 building and overhaul commenced. Engine 1 assumed RIT. Once the fire on the second floor of the 901 building was knocked down, Engine 2, Ladder 4, and Ladder 11 advanced two lines into the second floor and knocked down the remaining fire. As most companies had already used 2 to 3 SCBA bottles, an additional ladder company was requested for relief. Extensive overhaul was needed in both structures and a third alarm was requested for assistance. One firefighter was treated on scene for cramps and transported to hospital. Cause of fire was arson. Last company left the fire ground on June 18 at . 0209 hours.

First alarm assignment responded to a reported building fire at 2708 Garfield Avenue South. On arrival Engine 8 reported a large, occupied, 2-1/2 story duplex with heavy smoke on the first and second floors, and heavy fire from the rear on the second floor. Occupant met the rig stating his mother and adult brother were trapped inside and he was unable to get them out. Engine 8 masked up, kicked in the front door, crawled in, and were able to hear moaning toward the rear. Engine 8 located and dragged female victim to the front door where she was handed off to Rescue 1 and Ladder 11 who assisted medics loading the semiconscious female into the ambulance for transporting to hospital. Battalion 2 requested a second alarm. Engine 8 laid a tank line; Engine 6 laid a supply line and a backup line. Rescue 1 conducted a primary search and vented the second floor. Ladder 3 conducted a primary search and vented the first floor. Ladder 11 and Engine 17 vented the building by cutting two holes in the roof. Engine 6 assumed RIT and threw egress ladders for attack crews. Crews reported heavy fire on the first and second floor rear with extension into the attic and throughout the walls and between first and second floor ceilings. A third alarm was called and the building divided off by floors. An additional line was laid to the second floor. One firefighter received minor burns to neck and was transported to hospital for treatment. One cat was rescued but firefighters were unable to resuscitate it. Missing occupant was located safe at a relative's home. Extensive overhaul was needed and Rescue 9 was called in to assist with final wash down and picking up. Fire was under control at 0030. Board up was ordered and Engine 7 left on scene to assist residents retrieve belongings. Last company left the fire ground on June 25 at 0217 hours.

Engine 14 arrived and reported a two-story wood frame, single family home, fully involved with an exposure at 2604 Oliver, and laid a tank line to protect the exposure. Engine 4 arrived and laid a supply line to Engine 14 and a backup line. Ladder 10 was ordered to set up their water tower for an exterior master stream and was supplied by Engine 2. Engine 2's crew also assumed RIT. Rescue 9 checked the exposure for extension and conducted a primary search. Rescue 9 reported no extension and rescued one cat. Battalion Chief 4 requested a second alarm. Engine 16 was sent to the alley to support exterior operations with Engine 20 supplying Engine 16. A technical error in the dispatching system caused Engine 6 to be sent however they were not used and remained in staging. After the bulk of the fire was knocked down an attempt was made to enter the interior but after assessing the situation, it was decided not to enter due to deteriorating conditions caused by the fire. Utility companies were notified to secure utilities and the fire was placed under control at 0738. Last company left the fire ground at 1040.

Engine 14 responded to a car fire in the rear of 2019 Emerson Avenue North and upon arrival they found debris on fire that had spread to a vehicle in the rear of that address. The fire spread quickly to an adjacent three-story house at 2011 Emerson Avenue. Engine 14 laid a tank line to attempt to control the fire and requested a full assignment. Ladder 4 conducted a primary search on all floors of the dwelling. The fire spread up the outside of the rear of the dwelling and into the second and third floors and cockloft. Engine 14 laid a line to the interior through the rear door and at some point had to wait for a continuous water supply to proceed. The fire spread took hold of the cockloft. Engine 16 laid a supply line while Ladder 4 took the backup line into the building. Ladder 10 pulled ceilings and Rescue 1 went to the roof for ventilation and also pulled soffits. Engine 2 assumed RIT. A second alarm was struck for relief companies and further relief companies were called in the next few hours due to heat and extensive overhaul work. Last company left the fire ground at 2152.

An initial assignment was dispatched to 3003 Penn Avenue North. Dispatch upgraded the assignment to a full first alarm after caller reported smoke. Engine 14 arrived, reported smoke from the second floor, and upgraded the response to a 2nd alarm. Engine 14 laid an attack line to the second floor. Ladder 10 opened up and conducted a primary search of the fire floor. Engine 4 laid a backup and supply line but did not charge it. Engine 14 had a quick knockdown on a fire mainly confined to the stove and cabinetry in the kitchen in unit #5. Ladder 10, Ladder 4, and Rescue 9 conducted primary and secondary searches of the building and found nothing. Second alarm companies were cancelled enroute. Last company left the fire ground at 0912.

First alarm assignment responded to report of fire in a 5th floor apartment at 124-4th Street S.E., a senior and independent living facility. Engine 11 arrived and reported a seven-story apartment building with nothing showing, investigating. Upon investigating, Engine 11 reported fire in apartment 502. Rescue 9 arrived and secured the elevators and companies continued to the 4th floor and used stairway to the 5th floor. Rescue 9 reported heavy smoke in the hallway and called for a 2-2 alarm. Engine 1 arrived and backed up Engine 11's line and hooked to the MFD connections. Ladders 3, 11, and Engine 2 arrived with Engine 2 assigned RIT on the 4th floor. Rescue 9 reported a kitchen fire, knocked it down with a pump can, and checked for extension. Ladder 11 assisted one person down the stairway. Ladder 3 and Rescue 9 conducted further searches of the fire floor and reported no fire extension. Fans were used to ventilate smoke from the 5th floor. Ladder 3 checked for extension on the 6th floor and found only light smoke in the hallway that was vented by opening windows. Rescue 9 reported that no alarms were sounding in the hallways or the apartment upon entry. Resident of apartment 502 was taken by ambulance to HCMC for examination and observation. Crews completed overhaul, attack line was not needed, and second alarm companies were returned to service. Building manager was notified of the fire and informed that the sprinkler and alarm systems needed servicing and it was recommended use of a fire watch throughout the evening. Damage confined to an electric tabletop grill, stove and back surface behind the stove as well as smoke and soot on walls and ceiling. Last company left the scene at 2118.

First alarm assignment responded to report of fire showing out of the window of a church on the northeast corner of 24th and Nicollet. Battalion Chief 1 arrived on scene, confirmed fire showing from a window on the alley side of a large church building, and assigned tasks to incoming companies. Engine 5 was directed to lay an interior attack line. Engine 8 laid a supply line and a backup line. Ladder 11 forced entry for engine companies and located the fire. Ladder 3 conducted a primary search of the basement and Rescue 1 checked for extension above the fire room. Deputy arrived, assumed command, and called for a second alarm. Staging was set for 22nd at 1st Avenue. Battalion Chief 3 was assigned basement division; Battalion Chief 1 was assigned as Incident Safety Officer. Two of the second alarm companies were assigned to the incident. The fire was located in a basement utility room and was quickly extinguished; however ventilation of smoke from the basement took an hour or more to complete. A sand truck was requested to sand iced areas along 24th Avenue. One firefighter suffered a minor injury. Last company left the fire ground at 0110 on December 31st
